Diễn ra vào cuối thời Bắc Tống, Triết Tông băng hà, truyền ngôi cho em là Đoan vương, lên ngôi lấy hiệu Huy Tông. Huy Tông tuy tự xưng là Đạo thánh hoàng đế, kể ra cũng là một người nhân hậu, nhưng chỉ biết thư họa, đá cầu, từ đó dẫn đến trong triều đầy rẫy tham quan ô lại, tiêu biểu như bọn Thái Úy Cao Cầu Thái Sư Sái Kinh, Khu Mật Đồng Quán, hãm hại trung lương, đục khoét bá tánh. Thiên hạ như thế thử hỏi sao kô tù túng, sao kô ảm đạm? Xuyên suốt bộ phim là một gam màu vàng nhạt. Màu vàng của gió bụi. Một màu vàng tăm tối, không hề có chút ánh sáng. Diệu làm sao khi trong phim kể cả những cảnh ban ngày vẫn có gì đó tối tăm, kô chỉ là những khu rừng rậm chôn thây biết bao hảo hán, mà ngay cả Thủy Bạc Lương Sơn, tuy oai phong hùng vĩ, cũng chẳng có một chút gì tươi sáng. Nó thật giống như số phận của 108 anh hùng hảo hán Lương Sơn Bạc, chỉ như hạt cát bên đường, ê chề chua chát biết bao!
